Different Genres and their Purposes
If you do not already, I highly recommend reading for at least 30 minutes each day. If you are looking to expand your mind and gain skills like marketing, information, and creativity in general you should be reading different genres of books regularly. Each genre can help you acquire different skills so don’t think that just informational non-fiction books will help your mind. Every type of book has its purpose and that is what we will be talking about in this section
Non-fiction books will obviously help you with focus like any other type of reading while also helping you learn about a new topic. Pick one non-fiction book on a topic you wish to master such as marketing, the mindset of success, business, real estate or whatever it is that you wish to learn about. Read a bit of this book each day and set simple goals like one chapter each day so that you can finish the book in a timely manner. If you read some non-fiction each day you will certainly become much more knowledgeable on topics than the average person who does not read each day, giving you a competitive advantage at whatever field you are in.
Fiction books or story books may seem useless in helping you attain knowledge and skills that are useful to your life. However this is simply not the case. Reading a chapter of a good fiction book each day will help you with overall creativity and allow new outside of the box ideas to come to you more frequently. Also, fiction books can help you become a much better marketer for a business or brand you are building. Good fiction writers are masters at making you feel like the main character and making you become emotionally attached to a story. This is the same idea of great marketing as well. Great marketers can make the viewers of their ad feel like the target customer for their product based on emotional attachment to the problem their product solves. In summary fiction books will help you think more creatively, become a better story teller for marketing and even help you become a better conversationalist.
The last genre of books that I like to read every once in a while is history. Reading about historical events will help you better understand the world and the effects of different actions or situations that you may find yourself in. I am sure you have heard of the saying that it is better to learn from others’ mistakes rather than your own. This is the principle behind reading non-fiction historical books. Books on war and conquering lands will help you understand on a larger level the principles that may allow you to take over an industry or market. You may learn about the downfalls of an empire that could have been avoided through different courses of action. Even though these books may not talk about exact situations that you will find yourself in, the principles of success and maintenance will remain in any aspect of life forever and you can certainly learn from them.
