Hiring and Recruiting
Once you have grown your business as much as you can on your own, it is time to start hiring new people that can take care of your more tedious, time-wasting tasks. This is how you should look at your need to hire. When tasks that you could pay a lower wage for than your time is worth start getting in the way of mor important tasks then it is time to bring on new people. In this section we will go over places where you can find new hires in any industry and how to keep your employees happy and working.
An important thing to keep in mind with this section is that you can also use this information to start a recruiting business. Sales industries like solar, roofing, insurance, etc. have companies that will pay good money for recruits. Once you have recruited well for one company you can use your portfolio of success to get a ton of business.
The first option for finding new hires is to use a job posting site like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Monster.com, Snagajob, etc. Out of all of these options I would say that Indeed is the best job recruiting site because they have the most users. You can also use free trials with Indeed that get a ton of applicants right away. You can cancel before you are charged anything. I have used a lot of these on large scales and Indeed has given me by far the most real applicants. Look at the job descriptions in your industry that appear at the top when searching for your industry. This will give you a good idea of what to include in your job post. I also like to focus on opportunities with my job posts rather than just job descriptions. If you have a high ceiling for employees in your company, be sure to focus on this in your job post and use it to grab their attention when starting to read it. You should also try a couple of different versions of your job post and start small so you can quickly scale the one that works best.
Once you have some applicants you must focus on calling them as soon as they come in and setting up an interview quickly, so you have an advantage over other employers they have applied to. Try to schedule interviews for the next day or as soon as possible. You must remember that it is very easy to apply on sites like indeed. I always allow quick apply for sales jobs because you will get way more results. If you allow quick apply, which allows users on Indeed to send their resume automatically with a button, your applicant most likely has applied to a lot of different companies that same day. If you have a good interaction with them before anyone else, you have a much higher chance of getting them on board.
Before calling candidates however, you must write down a script that you will memorize over time so that you can be as professional and efficient as possible. Also be sure to add some personality if you are calling personally so that they remember your business positively when coming to a decision. The point is you want to be prepared for your calls and leave a professional and fun impression.
When doing interviews, you should simply think of questions you truly want to know about your applicants and have a friendly tone in your interviews that gives them a good vibe from the company but also keeps your authority in the situation by leading the conversation well. To do this you must write down your interview questions and have a good outline for your interviews. Shake their hand with eye contact, introduce yourself, tell them to have a seat and make them feel at home. Then you can have 30 seconds to a minute of just small conversation and move on to your questions. You can search good interview questions for your industry, and some are good to use in general. Such as, Why do you feel confident that you will perform well at this position? What are your goals for advancing at this job? I also like to ask what they know about the company to see if they have done any research. If they have not it may tell you about their work ethic but not always. Once the interview is over you will simply thank them for coming in and tell them you will give them a call later on or if they had a great interview and you felt a good connection with your applicant don’t be afraid to hire them on the spot.
Another great way that you can hire people is with Facebook groups. You should join any Facebook group related to your industry and start interacting with the communities. Try to post often and add value to the groups. In no time you will be respected enough to get great responses when making posts that mention you are hiring. This can be a great way to hire people that are already well experienced and PASSIONATE about your industry. Be sure to take advantage of this.
LinkedIn can also be a great way to hire people. You can make ads with a business account, but I prefer paying the $100 per month for a premium personal account so I can simply message people in my industry. You can come up with a great script that catches the attention of a prospect and quickly explains why they would be much happier working with you. Always be sure that the messages seem as least intrusive as possible and keep a future relationship open. You can learn even more about hiring on LinkedIn in our LinkedIn marketing section.
In my opinion one of the best and least competitive free ways to hire on a large scale if you offer remote positions is with Tik-Toks and Reels. If you can come up with great hooks that grab people’s attention and paints the position you are hiring for in an amazing light, then you can make viral videos that give you both brand recognition and applicants. Check out our section on marketing to learn even more about tips for these platforms and remember to stay consistent with this type of recruiting.
The last type of recruiting we will talk about is in person recruiting. Depending on your industry this can be one of the best ways to recruit. If you know other people in your industry, you can give them an incentive to hire for you that only costs you money when they make you money. You can also think of places where people in your industry go and build up some conversations. If you are in sales, you can recruit people from gas stations even just by seeing them multiple times over time and mentioning your position one day. Get creative with this, at the very least you should be going to some conventions and events related to your industry so that you can gain brand awareness and meet new people to hire.
