Industries to Start in
When first getting into sales the most important thing is not how much it pays, although it should hopefully pay enough to cover living expenses of course. What is most important is that they have a good training program and support system. The bigger companies tend to have these systems down very well and that is typically why they grow so big. Once you develop the right habits for being a great salesman then you can go on to do so much more than you may have thought possible. Remember a great salesman answers to no one because they are bringing in a company’s money. Once you have the skills and the track record there is no limit to how high you can go in this industry.
A. Lawncare and Pest Control. Lawncare and pest control are unbelievable ways to get into sales. They typically pay good base pay to help you, especially starting off. Keep in mind that when I say lawncare I am referring to the people that treat weeds and fertilize the grass. However, lawn maintenance is also a great way to start off on your own as well. You can go on Indeed or Snag a Job or any of these job searching sites and search these industries for sales jobs and you will find a lot of places hiring especially for the spring through the fall. Getting a job in these fields with door-to-door type sales is typically pretty easy because they do have high turnover rates and are always looking for new people that can generate sales for the company. You can go to our how to get a good job course to learn all about how I go about obtaining jobs like these fairly easy. You typically make $1,000 a week or more with these jobs and you are learning the most difficult type of sales right from the beginning of your career. The principles you will learn in door to door sales will help you with marketing and other sales jobs for the rest of your life and you can move up to manage a team and make 6 figures if you want or move on to other industries where you can make millions potentially.
B. Telemarketing. I know this may sound scary to a lot of people, but I loved telemarketing honestly. Typically with most of these jobs you are calling from a list of leads or cancelled customers rather than some random person. These jobs also typically pay over $1,000 a week and are easy to get into. This is also another place where you can learn the principles that you need to know to advance in sales.
C. TV Services. I started off in sales with a company called Verizon Fios originally, they offer high speed internet and TV services for residential customers. This is a more commission based job but the potential is also higher. I would recommend starting with option A or B if you can, but this is an industry that will certainly teach you work ethic with the long hours you work and you can also make good money if you sell deals.
D. Roofing leads. Another industry that is great to start out in is roofing. Typically, when you start you are not closing deals however you are learning the first steps to generating a customer and you should make anywhere from $700-$1500 a week depending on how you do. I would honestly recommend options A-C over this but if this is an option you have available to you go ahead and take the job.
