Meditation for Anxiety
Starting out, my favorite way to use meditation for anxiety was with simple guided meditations that I would find on YouTube. If you are new to meditating I highly recommend you start with these guided meditations because they can allow you to see the benefits of meditating fairly quickly without being too hard on yourself when your mind begins to wander. You can simply type in guided meditation for anxiety on YouTube, close your eyes, take some deep breaths and simply follow the instructions and it can help a lot. I believe there are more effective ways to meditate with your own imagination but this is always a great way to start and is much easier to focus on when you are new to meditating.
The important thing to understand about anxiety is that it is always based on your own FEARS and Insecurities (also fear). With that being said, it is important to find within yourself the reasons why you are having these feelings of uneasiness. After a few weeks of guided meditation I suggest that you practice this new exercise which is very similar to the meditation I use for dealing with past trauma. Close your eyes when you catch yourself feeling anxious in a safe place like your home and begin to focus on that feeling of uneasiness. Take nice deep breaths and begin to ask yourself why over and over again until you have discovered the FEAR that is leading you to feel the way you do. For example I may be feeling anxious and ask myself, why am I feeling anxious? Because I am afraid of what people think of me. Ok but why are you afraid of what other people think of you? Because I don’t want to be embarrassed. Why are you afraid of being embarrassed? Because I want to feel like I belong like everyone else.
In that example as you can see we have found the underlying FEAR that lives beneath that feeling. Knowing this can point us in the right direction for tasks to add to our daily lives that may help us feel better about ourselves as well as affirmations we can use in our meditation that will help as well. In this case I have learned that I was afraid of not belonging so I may want to go to the gym to help myself feel more worthy or start a new goal that I can progress at. I can also begin to meditate on phrases like I do belong and I am here for a reason. This is just one example of course but I believe it may be a common reality in an age where we are constantly comparing ourselves on social media. If you practice these types of meditations everyday for your anxiety I promise with FAITH in the process you may see amazing results in your mindset.
