Practicing Serenity

What will people think of me? What if I don’t get that job? What if I lose my relationships? And so and so on. These are some of the underlying thoughts we may have about our feelings of anxiety. Getting rid of anxiety is not about trying to change the things which are mostly outside of our control. It is instead about staying in the present moment and acting on the things we can.

When you are feeling anxious it is important to analyze the thoughts associated with that feeling and ask yourself if it is a reason you can control. If it is something you can take care of immediately such as a project or task you have been procrastinating on then stop what you are doing and get it done. If it is something that is for the most part outside of our control, write down that thought, look at it and tell yourself the positive opposite while remembering the anxiety so that you can work on it each day.

For example, if I am anxious in a crowd of people, I will ask myself why. Most of the time is because I want these new people to like me and I am afraid of being embarrassed. I will write this fear down and tell myself that the people I love will love me for who I am. On top of this I will also try to incorporate more social activities in my daily tasks. Remember that FAITH is built with practice and your anxieties are simply FEARs that must be replaced with FAITH. After a week of writing down the things you are anxious about you will have a great list of affirmations you can practice and a list of things you can build tasks around to improve them.
